Chairs Message
GCCN and the CEO Darren McCubbin have been very busy since the last report. Meeting with our project partners, Gunaikurnai Land and Water Aboriginal Corporation, AGL, Latrobe Regional Authority, Sustainability Victoria various working groups, Gippsland New Energy Conference 2023, Gippsland New Energy Web portal, Gippsland Power Hub, Gippsland New Energy Coordination Group and the Wellington New Energy Forum. There were also discussions with new energy proponent and communities that will be affected by the planned developments. All this on top of managing our usual programs that are highlighted in this edition.
In the month of March, there have been important global announcements on climate with the release of the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report released on the 20th, stating Climate change is a threat to human well-being and planetary health and there is a rapidly closing window of opportunity to secure a liveable and sustainable future for all.
On the 30th of March the Albanese Government with the support of the Greens and independents have passed The Safeguard Mechanism reforms, a key scheme to reduce Australia’s carbon emissions by a legislated target of 43 per cent by 2030. The agreement places a hard cap on Australia’s total carbon dioxide emissions, meaning major emitters of CO2 will have a set limit on how much CO2 they are able to emit.
Locally the 200MW Delburn Wind Farm, the Supreme Court has ruled that the 33 turbine project permit was not in breach of the Latrobe Planning scheme. This provides certainty for the Delburn Wind Farm to proceed.
